He received his diploma in physics at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fkp.uni-hannover.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Hannover<\/a> (Germany), where he investigated in the group of Prof. M. Henzler the initial stages of epitaxial growth of silicon on Si(100). In 1993 he received his Ph.D. in the same group, working on the magneto-conductivity of monolayer-thin films of Ag, Pb, and Au deposited on Si(111).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In 1993, he joined the Interdisciplinary Research Laboratories of the  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brl.ntt.co.jp\/E\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japanese Telecom NTT<\/a> in Tokyo (Japan), where he studied the surface passivation of III-V semiconductors using synchrotron radiation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In 1995, he moved as a  <a href=\"https:\/\/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie Curie Fellow<\/a> to the Materials Division of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.cnr.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TASC (now IOM) lab<\/a> in Trieste (Italy), where he worked on the engineering of heterostructure interfaces.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In 1997, he became a beam line scientist at the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elettra.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sincrotrone Trieste<\/a>, where he was appointed responsible of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elettra.eu\/elettra-beamlines\/nanospectroscopy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Nanospectroscopy Beamline<\/a>, at which he also performed his research on low-dimensional systems.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Finally, in 2004 he joined the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnr.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNR<\/a>, first in Trieste and since October 2006 at  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nano.cnr.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Istituto Nanoscienze<\/a> in Pisa (Italy). In these last years, his work focuses on the use of scanning probe microscopy, in particular scanning gate microscopy (SGM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), for the study of two-dimensional semiconductors and graphene nanostructures.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Stefan Heun has co-authored more than 200 papers and has given more than 120 invited presentations and seminars. To date (April 2026) his papers have been cited over 4500 times. h-index: 35.
